Dialysis bingo is a great way to learn some of the many foods in the renal diet. Want to help your patients remember the many low potassium foods they can enjoy? Check out these 20 unique Bingo cards for low potassium foods. Features fruits, vegetables, and popcorn!
Dialysis BINGO is a popular game in dialysis units to learn the renal diet. It’s a win-win: pass the time, learn some new foods, and maybe win some prizes.
I’ve been working on trying to figure out some pictorial based dialysis BINGO cards for a very long time. Honestly, I still don’t love these (the software “s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s” the graphics more than I’d like.) This is a good start.
I included 25 unique low potassium foods. There are 20 unique cards and 1 call card included. The patient cards are only pictures (no words). Call card includes words. Oh and the “FREE” space is a sunshine:). I can envision playing this with a little commentary or maybe quiz questions.

Conversational Dialysis BINGO to Learn the Renal Diet!
“I-apple,” I’d say. “I love apples, applesauce, apples with cinnamon, apples with nutmeg, apple cider, apples in a pie.” (See? Apples suddenly becomes so much more!)
Or,
“What small red berry is low in potassium and served at Thanksgiving?” (answer: cranberries). Then you could go on to talk about cranberries a little bit while people find cranberries. Who doesn’t love an easy quiz question, right?
Or
“G-Salad,” I’d say. “Do you know how to dress-up your salad with less sodium? Yup, vinegar and oil. G-salad.”
I’d love feedback on these so I can improve them. I definitely think dialysis BINGO can be a great tool for learning many of the lovable foods allowed for someone following a renal diet and needing to watch potassium, phosphorus or sodium.
Low Potassium Prizes!

Finally, you could definitely do a fun low potassium prize for this dialysis BINGO game. Low potassium prize ideas: Popcorn, small lunchbox size boxes of cranberries, applesauce cups, mandarin orange cups, fresh apple, fresh limes or lemons, 1-2 small clementines, or even the pre-packaged lunchbox size snap peas or baby carrots (of course keep those ones cold as long as possible!).
