    Potassium Management for Kidney Disease

Teaching potassium management to patients with kidney disease is challenging.

Over the years, I’ve found that relying solely on “eat” and “avoid” lists of low- and high-potassium foods is not enough. While this is a great first step, we can’t stop there. Too often, patients end up overly avoiding (or even fearing) high-potassium foods while overindulging in low-potassium options.

But we know that portion size matters. A couple of cherry tomatoes are fine, but snacking on a whole watermelon may be too much.

Additionally, non-dietary factors—like medications and constipation—can also raise potassium levels. These factors are just as important to address in patient education.

To help you bring clarity to potassium management, we’re excited to introduce our "Potassium Possibilities" Patient Education Kit!

What's Included in the "Potassium Possibilities" Patient Education Kit:

Our "Potassium Possibilities” kit is dedicated to teaching patients potassium management strategies. It clarifies common dietary and non-dietary causes of high potassium, and emphasizes the importance of portion sizes.

In other words, small portions of high-potassium foods can be manageable, while excessive portions of low-potassium foods may be risky.

    1. Bulletin Board - so quick and easy to assemble!

    2. Handout - engaging and actionable handout, available in English & Spanish!

    3. Test Your Knowledge Game - fun and interactive activity to reinforce understanding on which foods count as fluid

    4.  New Meal Plan: Our patients LOVE meal plans! For September, it's the "Iron Boost for Dialysis” meal plan! This meal plan features delicious recipes like Strawberry Tahini Overnight Oats and Chicken Lentil Salad to help boost iron intake and tackle anemia.
