Our September Patient Education Kit is here and all about plant-focused foods!

A survey of renal dietitians showed that counseling patients on protein needs was the most important nutrition intervention AND the one they spent the most time on.1  If this is the case with you, it might be challenging to find a new approach for you and your patients.  That’s where our latest handout, Power UP With Plant-Focused Proteins comes in.

Historically, the KDOQI guidelines have recommended 50% of protein intake be high biological value (HBV).  However the most recent guidelines no longer recommend HBV protein over plant proteins, and acknowledge that there are many potential benefits with plant proteins.

This new handout embraces the new KDOQI guidelines, and provides a fresh approach for you to discuss protein with your patients.  While animal proteins may work really well for some of your patients, there are others who are vegetarian or where high intake of animal protein may be unappealing, contributing to constipation, inflammation, or higher phosphorus and potassium intakes.  Without the focus on HBV proteins, you can tailor your protein recommendations to better meet your patient’s overall needs.

This handout helps patients see how they can easily include a variety of plant proteins to foods they already enjoy.  There are also additional sections that highlight for the patient and dietitian where more specific dietitian guidance might be needed- like choosing a variety of foods to ensure adequate intake, adding healthy fats for satiety at meals, etc.  This makes it easy for you to discuss these potential issues with your patient to ensure they have a well-rounded diet.

We have also added plant protein supplement suggestions so that your patients who need a little protein boost have clear options.

There are many options for plant-focused recipes, but to give your patients a jump start, we have also included a few tasty recipes for quick access.

Overall, this handout makes adding in more plant proteins easy and healthy for your patients!

Pair it with our NEW Plant Proteins Wordsearch and Shop Smart Bulletin Board to give your patients tips and tricks for finding the best plant-based foods.
