One of the many lessons you’ve likely learned this past year is that emergencies or natural disasters can happen at any time. While we can’t control how or when these things happen, we can control how prepared we are for them.
This handout provides clear instructions to help your patients know how to prepare for emergencies and be confident to know what not to do and what to do- especially if they can’t get to dialysis.
The focus of the handout is on limiting sodium, fluids and potassium as well as ensuring that they have important supplies on hand- like medications and batteries for monitors.
Another part of emergency preparedness is making sure that patients have important numbers on hand so they can communicate with their doctors and the dialysis clinic.
Along with the handout is an emergency reminder sheet that can be handed out any time there is an imminent emergency to provide a quick reminder of key emergency preparedness points.
