Confusion. It’s something we work really hard to eliminate with our patients. When our patients are confused it can make them fearful, less confident, and less able to make positive changes. But sometimes there are confusing concepts in kidney nutrition- like potassium and phosphorus– two long words they’ve probably never heard of before, they both start with P and they are both in similar foods. And then there is protein, which starts with another P and can also be confusing, especially with the whole albumin thing. If your patient hasn’t gotten the difference between these two nutrients sorted out- this handout is here to save the day!
We’ve got potassium and phosphorus side by side with a helpful easy way to remember the difference, food sources, and some helpful facts. We listed the same for protein, just for a little extra clarity. This handout pairs well with our crossword puzzle on the 3P’s so help reinforce some of the differences between all the P’s in renal nutrition.
This handout can be great to use with brand new patients, or with patients who have been around the block a time or two, but still get tripped up by the P’s. After reviewing this handout with your patients, in no time they will have clarity instead of confusion and have confidence that they can keep your recommendations straight- which will mean productive changes in their food choices to support their health.
