June 2025 Patient Education Kit: Food Insecurity in Dialysis

Food Insecurity in Dialysis
Food insecurity is a pressing issue in dialysis care. Between rising grocery costs and the high price of treatments and medications, it’s not always easy to keep the pantry stocked with kidney-friendly foods. For many patients—especially younger adults—the struggle goes beyond meal planning. It impacts treatment adherence, nutrition status, and overall health.
A recent 2025 study found that 22% of adults on in-center hemodialysis reported food insecurity. These patients were more likely to miss dialysis sessions and had a three-fold higher risk of fluid or electrolyte-related hospitalizations.
As a renal dietitian, you play a crucial role in helping patients navigate these challenges.
That’s why we created this month’s Kidney-Friendly on a Budget education kit—designed to give you simple, impactful tools that support nutrition education and address food access head-on.
